READING think "3"

READING think “3” . . .
Does your young author dream of seeing
their stories published? Help make
her writing first-rate by teaching her the magic number
“3”.
• Stories have three parts: a beginning, where the
reader meets the characters; a middle, where the
characters try to solve a problem; and an end,
which tells the reader how the problem was
solved.
• Stories need three things: characters, a setting (a
place where it happens), and a problem to solve.
• Stories are more interesting when characters are
given three opportunities to solve a problem,
rather than solving it on the first go. Encourage
your youngster to brainstorm three possible
solutions for her characters to try.

Washington’s Resource Program works with
students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Our
program has a resource teacher and resource paraprofessional
who work with students in the resource
room and in the classroom. Many of our students
have Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and
some do not. We work with students in small groups
and one on one to teach strategies in reading, writing,
spelling and math. We also work collaboratively
with the general education teachers discussing best
instructional methods, instructional materials and
strategies to help each student succeed. Many
parents ask how they can help their child at home.
One of the most important things you can do is read
to your child and with your child. Instill a love of
reading, which can lead to a love of learning. Read
from a wide variety of sources, and be sure to set a
good example by reading in front of your child.
